Are Adjustable Bases Worth It? 7 Benefits You Didn't Know About

Adjustable BasesSleep HealthBuying Guide

Adjustable bases have come a long way from the clunky hospital beds of the past. Today's models are sleek, feature-rich, and surprisingly affordable. But are they actually worth the investment?

1. Reduce Back Pain and Pressure

Elevating your upper body and knees takes pressure off your lower back. Many back pain sufferers find that sleeping in a slightly elevated "zero gravity" position, with the head and knees both raised, eases morning stiffness.

2. Stop Snoring (and Save Your Relationship)

Elevating your head by just 6-8 inches opens your airway and reduces snoring. If your partner is keeping you awake with snoring, an adjustable base might be cheaper than couples therapy. Split king bases let each person adjust independently.

3. Reduce Acid Reflux and GERD

Raising the head of the bed is a common recommendation for nighttime reflux; ask your doctor what angle is right for you. An adjustable base raises your whole upper body evenly — unlike stacking pillows, which can actually worsen the problem by bending your body at the wrong angle.

4. Improve Circulation

Elevating your legs above your heart promotes blood flow and reduces swelling. People who are on their feet all day often like it, and it helps anyone whose doctor has recommended raising their legs.

5. Make Reading and Watching TV More Comfortable

No more propping yourself up with a mountain of pillows. An adjustable base lets you find the perfect angle for reading, watching TV, or working on your laptop in bed.

6. Easier to Get In and Out of Bed

For older adults or anyone with mobility issues, raising the head of the bed makes it much easier to sit up and swing your legs out. This simple benefit can make a huge difference in daily comfort.

7. They're More Affordable Than You Think

At Mattress Discount Plus, you can try an adjustable base in our Yukon showroom before you buy. Current models and prices are in our online store, and financing through SNAP Finance, Acima or Synchrony works on bases too.

What to Look For in an Adjustable Base

  • Wireless remote: Essential for easy adjustment
  • USB charging ports: Convenient for charging your phone
  • Under-bed lighting: Helpful for nighttime trips to the bathroom
  • Zero-gravity preset: One-button access to the optimal sleep position
  • Quiet motor: You don't want a loud motor waking you up

Compatible with Most Mattresses

Most modern mattresses work with adjustable bases, including memory foam, latex, and hybrid models. Innerspring mattresses with thicker coils may not flex as well. Ask us about the specific model you like before you buy, and check that its warranty allows use on an adjustable base.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy

  • Does the size match? A Queen base takes a Queen mattress. A Split King is two Twin XL bases side by side with two Twin XL mattresses, so each side moves on its own.
  • Will it replace my frame or sit inside it? Most bases stand on their own legs. Some fit inside an existing frame; measure the inside of yours first.
  • Is it a wall-hugger? This design slides back as the head rises, so you stay within reach of your nightstand.
  • Is there an outlet near the bed? The base needs one, and a surge protector is a good idea.
  • What does the warranty cover? Look for separate terms on the motor and the frame.

Will My Current Mattress Work?

If it's memory foam, latex or a hybrid, it probably will. Older innerspring beds and very thick pillow tops often won't bend well. Bring the brand and model name, or a photo of the law tag, and we'll help you check.
