Buying a mattress as a couple is one of the trickiest purchases you'll make together. One person runs hot, the other cold. One likes firm, the other soft. One tosses and turns, the other sleeps like a rock. Sound familiar?
The Biggest Challenges for Couples
Different firmness preferences: This is the #1 issue. One partner wants a cloud, the other wants a board. The solution? A medium mattress (5-6 firmness) is the most universally comfortable, or consider a split king with two different mattresses.
Motion transfer: If one partner moves a lot during sleep, the other feels every toss and turn on a traditional innerspring. Memory foam and hybrid mattresses with individually wrapped coils dramatically reduce motion transfer.
Temperature differences: One partner is always hot, the other always cold. Look for mattresses with gel-infused foam or breathable coil systems. An adjustable base with independent controls can also help.
Best Mattress Types for Couples
Hybrid mattresses are our top recommendation for couples. They combine the motion isolation of foam with the support and airflow of coils. On our floor, the Diamond Cabernet Medium Hybrid and the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid are good places for couples to start.
Memory foam excels at motion isolation but can sleep hot. Look for gel-infused options.
Split King: If you truly can't agree, a split king gives each person their own mattress on a shared frame. Pair it with a split adjustable base and you each have complete control.
Size Guide for Couples
- Queen (60" x 80"): The minimum recommended size for couples. Each person gets 30 inches of width.
- King (76" x 80"): The most popular choice for couples. Each person gets 38 inches, the width of a Twin.
- Cal King (72" x 84"): Best for taller couples who need extra length.
The "Try It Together" Test
At Mattress Discount Plus, we encourage couples to come in together and lie on mattresses the way you actually sleep. Lie on your sides facing away from each other — that's the real test. If one person moves, can the other feel it? That tells you everything about motion transfer.
A 15-Minute Test Plan for Two
Bring each other, wear comfortable clothes, and give every finalist at least five minutes. Here's the order we suggest in our Yukon showroom.
1. Start in the middle. Lie on a medium bed first, such as the Diamond Grace Medium or the Sealy Posturepedic Plus Medium. It becomes your baseline for "softer" and "firmer."
2. Lie the way you sleep. Side sleepers on their side, back sleepers on their back. Five minutes each, not thirty seconds.
3. Do the motion test. One of you rolls over and then gets up. The other says how much they felt it.
4. Sit on the edge. If one of you sleeps near the edge or sits there to get dressed, the edge should hold you without sliding.
5. Swap sides, then compare neighbors. Try one step firmer and one step softer than your baseline, for example the Diamond Cool Caress Firm and the Diamond Aquamarine Plush, and keep the one you both rate highest.
Floor models change, so text (405) 467-3744 before you come and we'll tell you what's out to try.
When One of You Runs Hot
- Pick a hybrid over all-foam if heat is the main complaint; coils leave more room for air to move.
- Use breathable sheets and a breathable mattress protector, which matter more than most people expect.
- More ideas are in our guide for hot sleepers.
