Bought a new mattress and need to get rid of the old one? Disposing of a mattress in Oklahoma City isn't as straightforward as putting it on the curb. Here are your best options.
Option 1: Ask Us to Haul It Away
The easiest option: when Mattress Discount Plus delivers your new mattress, ask about adding haul-away of your old one to the delivery order. Ask us for pricing when you buy.
How it works:
- Buy your new mattress at Mattress Discount Plus
- Add old mattress haul-away to your delivery order
- Our team picks up the old mattress when they deliver the new one
- We take it for disposal or recycling
Option 2: Oklahoma City Bulky Waste Pickup
Oklahoma City picks up bulky waste, mattresses included, once a month for single-family homes on city trash service. It is part of your regular trash fees, and you do not need to schedule it: each home has an assigned pickup date.
- Find your date in the My OKC Utilities app, in your account at okcutilities.com, on the MyTrashDay map or on your water bill.
- Set it out on time: by 6 a.m. on your assigned day, and no more than three days early.
- Leave room: about 5 feet of clearance around the pile, away from mailboxes, meters, trees and cars.
- Mind the size: the first 4 cubic yards are included; bigger piles are billed on your next utility bill.
- Bed bugs? Wrap the mattress in plastic and write “bed bugs” on it before you set it out.
Questions go to the OKC Utilities Customer Care Center at (405) 297-2833. Rules can change, so check the city’s bulky waste page before you set anything out.
Live in Yukon or Another Suburb?
Rules differ by city. Yukon residents can call City of Yukon Sanitation Services at (405) 354-4317 to ask how to get rid of a mattress; the city’s transfer station is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon. In Mustang, Edmond, Moore, Norman and the other metro cities, check your city’s sanitation page or call before you put a mattress at the curb.
Option 3: Donate It
A mattress that is clean, dry and free of stains, tears, sagging and pests may be welcome at a charity, a shelter or a family in need. Call ahead: many donation centers, including some thrift stores, no longer accept used mattresses, and those that do often need them in like-new condition.
Option 4: Recycle It
Most of a mattress can be recycled: the steel springs become scrap metal, foam can be turned into carpet padding, and wood and fabric can be reused. Search Earth911 with your ZIP code to find mattress recyclers near you, and call first to ask about fees and drop-off hours.
What Not to Do
- Don’t dump it: illegal dumping can bring fines in Oklahoma City.
- Don’t burn it: foam and fabric give off toxic fumes when burned.
- Don’t set it out early: in OKC, bulky items go out no more than three days before your pickup date.
